Periodic cicadas, which were last seen en masse around the Shoals in 1998, are emerging from the soil in huge numbers, prompting many calls to Becker, a regional agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. His office is based in Florence.

“One lady called and was frantic about having thousands of cicadas in her yard,” Becker said.

As many as 1.5 million cicadas can sometimes be found on a single acre in Alabama. Male cicadas produce an extremely loud and incessant buzzing sound as they attempt to attract females.

The cigar-shaped insects with large red eyes look menacing but are harmless, Becker said.

“They don’t bite or sting; they don’t even eat anything” he said. “They come out of the ground just to mate and lay their eggs to produce the next batch of this brood of cicadas which we will see 13 years from now.”

The insects can damage small twigs when the females bore holes in the tender vegetation to lay their eggs. If several females choose the same twig to lay their eggs, it can be killed.

As the eggs hatch, the wingless cicada nymphs will fall to the ground where they will burrow into the soil and spend the next 13 years maturing into adults, Becker said.

While living in the soil, the nymphs will feed on sap from the roots of trees and other plants.

Charles Ray, an Auburn-based entomologist for the extension system, said cicadas do not harm the plants they feed on as nymphs.

Any suggestions, ideas, or criticism is welcome. The main character, Helene an 11/12 year old girl is going to be like my alter ego, but she is going to be modeled after Helen of Troy and the plot is going to be outlined like a tale of greek mythology, but its in modern times. She is going to gain status when she gets older and will then get taken hostage by a resenful man that she doesn’t love.

I am a 27 year old tall and slender male with a close family history of marfan syndrome and my state doc suspects I have it as well but we don’t have access to proper healthcare to find out for sure.

I often have sluggishness, laziness and reluctance to physical activity, skipped beats, occasional more serious arrhythmias that last for minutes or hours, and sometimes i get severe postural hypotension and blurred vision from standing up and i almost pass out. More rarely, The doctors have found mild branch block problems in my electric signals of my heart, and an echocardiogram has detected minor valve leakage.

I have been given medications in the past long term like ritalin that really did a number on my circulation as a child and that could be a factor. Im just curious what peoples opinions on this situation are.

Finally, the most rare symptom i have had a few times was signs of stroke or signs that blood was not getting to parts of my brain.

Many years ago the water looks so good and so clean. You can even see the different kinds of water living things swimming around you when you go deep into the sea. The chorals and seaweeds looks great. The beauty of the deep sea is above each person’s imagination. But, now all I see are garbage all over the ocean. Dead fishes and other dead creatures carried by seaweeds ………………………………..to be continued……I wish I will be of helped.

Schedules are often weighted on where games are played, and perhaps no Big Ten team has a tougher road schedule than Michigan State. The Spartans play road games against Ohio State, Nebraska, Iowa and Northwestern, teams that combined to go 37-16 in 2010. Throw in a Week 3 trip to Notre Dame, a likely preseason top 20 team, and Michigan State has one of the toughest road schedules in the nation.

HOUSTON
— The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the death sentence Wednesday of a man convicted of strangling a 5-year-old girl taken from an El Paso store and then burning her body.

David Santiago Renteria, 41, already was a convicted sex offender on probation when he was seen on a Walmart security video leaving the store with Alexandra Flores. The girl had wandered from her family doing Christmas shopping in November 2001. Her body was found the next day in an alley.

The state’s highest criminal appeals court threw out Renteria’s death sentence in 2006, saying prosecutors provided misleading evidence that gave jurors the impression Renteria was not remorseful.

An El Paso jury, during a new punishment trial two years later, returned him to death row.

“I’m really glad we’re past this,” El Paso District Attorney Jaime Esparza, who prosecuted the case, said Wednesday. “The last time, they reversed it on, frankly, on an issue that we thought we had tried according to the law. Returning him was something we had to do.”

Lawyers for Renteria did not immediately respond to a phone message left by The Associated Press.

In its 73-page ruling, the appeals court rejected all 49 issues raised by Renteria’s attorneys from the second penalty phase trial. Most of the points raised focused on jury selection and the questioning of prospective jurors. Another challenge questioned the legal sufficiency of evidence used to show Renteria would be a future danger, one of the key questions jurors must answer when deciding on a death sentence.

10 of the "worst" stations in England had been identified for ?50m of improvements, including Manchester Victoria, Wigan North Western, Crewe, and Liverpool Central.

The historic Crewe station, a vital hub in the UK national rail network, is falling apart and is a disgrace. It gets considerable traffic and should have far better facilities. This is possibly the most important station outside London and needs to be improved.

The major NS/EW junction of Warrington Bank Quay is also a disappointment, considering it is a major town on the West Coast mainline, and a junction connecting a North Wales service (which ought to go to Holyhead rather than terminating at Llandudno), the station has nothing and is too bleak.

The underground Liverpool Central is like a dungeon, its overcrowded island platforms an accident waiting to happen, and again a lack of proper facilities.

It’s a disgrace. The government wants more people to use the trains, but doesn’t seem prepared to make the railways attractive to travel on. Many stations have been reduced to unstaffed halts, with bus type shelters and little else – no toilets, no refreshments, nothing.

All these train companies are making massive profits, and in any other country they would be obliged to use that money to improve facilities for their passengers.

No British government has been prepared to spend as much on the infrastructure as most other countries. I have a friend who travels extensively in all european countries and even Romania has better roads and railways. And I was shocked to learn that our personal tax burden is one of the lowest in the EEC. Is that why we spend so much more on big TV’s, mobile phones, fast food and booze, while things that really matter go hang? I don’t know. Perhaps you do.

Announcements have been made about station improvements – including all those that you mention. The new Government has not stated that these works have been cancelled in the spending cuts announced earlier this week. Remember, that there is no magic wand to be waved which will mean the work will be miraculously done overnight. It all takes time, and has to be programmed and done around the continued use of busy stations.

rdenig_male | May 26, 2010

There are only 66 stations in Category B.
Branson is the head of Virgin trains. Train operating companies are not responsible for stations. Stations are owned and operated by Network Rail. Train operating companies have no control whatsoever over what Network Rail do with the money to them by train operating companies for the right to operate the franchise. That is between Network Rail and the government.
If you are somehow anti-Branson, you seem to have picked the wrong topic.

You highlight a few stations that are in a poorish state, thought not nearly as bad as you state. On the network as a whole most stations are cleaner, have had more re-furbishment and have been made more user friendly than at any time since the second world war. Huge progress has been made in providing not only clean and re-furbished stations but beter places to eat and drink, clean toilets and better facilities for the disabled as well as high tech train running information. British Rail was privatised years ago. Some stations are owned by rail companies and some are owned by Network Rail (ex-Railtrack).

Good point, before tens of millions are spent on a new ‘hi-speed’ rail lines, the existing rail network needs to be brought up to standard. When the railways were privatised we were told we wouldn’t have to pay a subsidy to maintain the railways. We’re still paying a subsidy and train company directors are collecting millions in profits from exorbitant fares.
